BBC Radio Five Live

As ever, the press statement implied something that wasn't quite like the reality.

Kevin had signed a twelve month contract with the BBC's news and sport station, BBC Radio Five Live. Alas, it was not for a regular slot, but to be a stand-in presenter on the station. After years of being mainly a supply DJ at one station, he was about to do the same on another.

Kevin turned up in a variety of slots on the station, including filling in on Nicky Campbell's morning show, and presenting late night phone-ins.

However it was to end up that Kevin would end up filling in mainly on one slot - the afternoon slot. Kevin would often appear filling in for Ian Payne or Fi Glover in the 1-4pm slot, so much so that when Ian Payne moved to present a new evening sports show between 7 and 10pm in January 2001, you may have thought Kevin may have been in with a chance for the time slot.

Sadly not. The show went to Radio One DJ, Simon Mayo. Kevin did get to do half of the fill in slots in the five months until Simon started in May, sharing the job with a similarly talented presenter, Fi Glover.

For some time after though, things came full circle. Whilst his work at Five Live was reduced, he did become - for a short time - the principle stand-in for Simon Mayo, presenting the show as if it was his. Some things never change.
