Jazz, then Smooth

XFM is a yo-yo. One minute it wanders off to be more 'credible' with it's audience, then it jerks of to be 'mainstream' and make some more cash. One minute a DJ can be sidelined, the next they can be the flavour of the month.

As Kevin probably well knows, the world of radio is fickle.

Even if Kevin's out of favour at XFM, it appeared he'd still got some friends (and a very good agent).

Within six weeks after loosing his daily show, he appeared on Real Radio in Wales - filling in for the breakfast show presenter for the week beginning 16 February 2004.

Next trip was to BBC 6music for a stint on The Night Train, with its glamourous 2-7am timeslot, appearing between 30 March and 2 April 2004.

The station is similar in style to GLR, the now defunct BBC local radio station for London, where Kevin once worked early in his career, and where many hoped Kevin would find a permanent home.

And on 4 April 2004, Kevin started a new show back on Jazz FM on a Sunday morning. Not long afterwards, he'd gained a Saturday show as well.

Smoothly Goes

In November 2004 it was announced that Jazz FM would be rebranded as 102.2 Smooth FM, and on 19 April 2005 the first schedule change was announced.

Presenter Kevin Greening will join the weekday line-up in the lunchtime 10am - 3pm slot. Kevin's voice is already familiar with listeners as he moves from his weekend mid-morning show to take up his new role in the weekday line-up. Kevin, who shot to fame as one half of BBC Radio 1's breakfast duo with Zoe Ball, will work exclusively for 102.2 Smooth FM.

Press release about Smooth FM's launch

Daily show. Five hours long. Exclusive contract... So bye bye to two hours a week at XFM (the show he'd been presenting mysteriously disappeared when he left), and any filling in on 6music for a while.

And what did the great man have to say himself?

Kevin Greening said, "I can't wait to get installed in my 'Smooth Booth' to roll out five hours (just the five?) of London's smooth favourites every day. It'll be radio with the crusts cut off."

Kevin remained in that slot until another relaunch on 26 March 2007 when the station rebranded as Smooth Radio. Kevin remained a cornerstone of the schedule, moving to a 3 hour afternoon show, 1-4pm, and 1-5pm on Saturdays.
