Smouldering Rails.

The current heat wave has of course taken its toll on the UK’s rail infrastructure, with speed restrictions put in place in case the rails buckled in the abnormal heat.

Unlike the national railways, the London Underground has had fewer speed restrictions, helped by the fact that they can pinpoint where they need to place them because, unlike Railtrack, they didn’t sack all their experienced engineers.

None-the-less tonight I was delayed at Hammersmith station when the train was emptied out so it could go down the line empty to investigate reports of a smouldering rail down the line.

Probably I was the only one to come up with the image of children holding a magnifying glass to the tracks to see if it would burn. Which is no doubt a good thing.
