Auntie Goes Open Source

Posted on 12 July 2005 in BBC (No comments)

The BBC's new Open Source portal went live today, giving the public a single site to look at for all the software projects that the BBC has released under various open source projects.

Well not quite all. The BBC's text only web page parser, Betsie is missing. Betsie takes a web page and tries to make an accessible, text only version of it, and the source code has been available for years. That said, it does have it's own, slightly peculiar license.

Still along with backstage.bbc.co.uk and the Creative Archive, it's fantastic to see the hard work of my various colleagues being made available to the general public who have, after all, paid for it in the first place.
