Finally Rebranded

I totally missed this cos no one actually told me, but finally it's complete. Yes, the new BBCi bridge launched on NTL's Bromley network on Tuesday 8 November - a whole six months after it went out on Telewest.

It's been so long that I'd almost forgotten about it, especially when the same thing launched on NTL's Langley network about five months ago - after that, all we could do was wait for Bromley to catch up and as such, the code was pretty much put on a shelf and left, whilst we got on with other things.

The cause of the delay was a problem with the code in the set top boxes. It's been so long that I can't actually remember what was going on. Something to do with images not working or something. I dunno. To be honest, I sort of gave up caring and got on with other stuff. Which too has been sat on a shelf waiting to launch. Cue huge sigh.

It does have to be said that finishing a project then having to wait months for it to launch, isn't particularly motivating. You don't exactly get a great sense of achievement when it finally launches.

Anyway, the more observant cable users might also have noticed that the cable text services got faster recently. We've been making lots of major infrastructure changes behind the scenes recently, which are delightful as the user wouldn't notice any difference (or at least in the case of Freeview, shouldn't have noticed...).

The cable bit was launched 2 November, and had the added bonus that as well as changing the way all the content was delivered, the code that actually displays the content was re-written to make it faster to display when you select something.

I got to play with it before launch, and the change is pretty good. Haven't got any metrics but it felt faster and more responsive to me.

Of course few will notice - no one does when things work better but look the same on screen. Make things slower or break them, and you'll get a response that's slightly different!
