No Smoking Pubs

Well, I have to say I'm not exactly disappointed to hear that smoking is to be banned in pubs, clubs and restaurants. Whilst I know many people will be worried about their business, if we follow Ireland and New York, things will work out all right.

I have to say that I was never in favour of that absurd idea that you would be able to smoke only in pubs that didn't serve food - that always seemed just completely bonkers, and from what I read, no one from either side (pro or anti smoking ban) thought it was a good idea.

Actually I've never really minded mass smoking in pubs, despite being asthmatic. In any situation, it's always the lone smoker who lets their smoke go in your direction that has always bothered me more. Thankfully I can't think of anyone I know who smokes who lets that happen when I'm around - the problem is always with people I don't know. At least that soon won't be a problem.

But smoking in restaurants - well that I won't miss as it's something I've never been able to stand. We once got given a no smoking table in Pizza Express in Ealing. A no smoking table that was right next to a smoking table. It was absolutely stupid positioning of the tables and meant that throughout the meal I couldn't eat without smoke being blown in my direction. Smoke when eating has always been on my list of all time hates. In the end I demanded that we be moved - no mean feat given the place was rammed, but I would probably have walked out without paying the bill if they hadn't have had a spare table for us to move to. There was no way I could have continued eating with the face full of smoke I was having to put up with. Thankfully there was a spare table and we finished our meal in comfort.

But anyway, more important about the forthcoming ban... soon I'll be able to go out for a pint and not have to put all my clothes in the wash as soon as I get home. Sod the health benefits of a smoking ban - the environmental impact of reduced washing machine loads will be massive!
