Entries from March 2008
- 24 March 2008: Turn your cache back on
- For some time, I’ve been wondering why Movable Type has been, well frankly, so slow on my home PC. And specifically my Linux PC. It’s been an insane situation where trying to add one entry could take five minutes.
- 23 March 2008: TV/Broadband/Phone together - reviewing the options
- What is the market like in the UK for bundled packages of TV/phone/broadband? Could I go start bundling my TV, broadband and phone and save some cash?
- 23 March 2008: Comments - email notifications and feed
- When it comes to keeping track of comments on blogs, well frankly it’s a pain in the backside. I never remember where I’ve posted anything, and I rarely know if anyone has ever replied.
- 21 March 2008: Return of the lost BBC code
- Recently finding the BBC mailing list subscription page I coded in 2001, reminded me of another blog post I’ve been meaning to write. Some time ago, I telneted in to one of the internal web servers at work where I had my own webspace years ago and which I occasionally still use for various bits and pieces. A lot of my old code is still there, mostly templates for long defunct CGI scripts. However one particular page caught my eye.
- 18 March 2008: Lost BBC coding found
- It’s coming up for five years since I coded my last web page for the BBC, and very little of my work remains. This is probably a good thing given the code isn’t exactly what people these days would be impressed by.
- 12 March 2008: Alistair Darling - the man who will kill the British pub
- I’m not one for political posts normally, but sometimes you just have to ask what the hell our politicians are playing at? I’m talking about you, Alistair “Pub Killer” Darling and your insane 4p rise in excise duty on beer. That is, ladies and gentlemen, a rise of 13% in tax. At a time when the cost of a pint is increasing anyway due to higher prices in materials.
- 11 March 2008: The cheese on TV that really grates
- Being a bit of a keen cook, and someone who likes to do things reasonably properly if possible, I know Delia wasn’t really aimed at me. I mean, there’s just no way on earth you’ll find frozen mashed potato in my freezer.
- 7 March 2008: It’s too wide! Or, the problems of not actually knowing how your users actually use web browsers
- Now I must say I do like the visual look and feel of the new BBC homepage, but it gives me yet again, another infuriating problem. It’s the browser window size. I just don’t want my browser window set that wide.
- 2 March 2008: Eurovision 2008 - good grief, the UK’s picked a decent song!
- Whilst sitting down to a nice, homemade green Thai curry last night, we happened to catch the second half of “Eurovision: Your Decision” last night which meant I got to see a strange woman in a corset and an extremely short skirt, Michelle Gayle and Andy Abraham battle it out in front of Terry Wogan sat on a throne in a programme format which was clearly designed to try and stop the UK public from voting for some diabolical crap again.
- 2 March 2008: Comments Publishing Policy
- Because I like being transparent I have decided to publish my policy on the decisions which are made about comments and their publication on this website.
