Building Societies, and the turbulent times of a bank shareholder

Posted on 16 February 2009 in Money (No comments)

As an idealistic 19 year old, I’d voted against demutualisation of the Halifax believing - as I do today - that an organisation based on serving its members first, is better than one that puts it’s shareholders first.

Posted on 15 February 2009 in BBC (4 comments)

I mentioned the other week that I was in the process of digitising my VHS collection, to see what interesting things I could find for prosperity. Naming your code after something sensible. Or not…

Posted on 12 February 2009 in BBC red button (1 comment)

One of the colleagues has recently been spending some time trying to make some sense out of a series of long lasting code that has been given some slightly odd and meaningless names.

Online Banking and the bad URLs that go with it

Posted on 5 February 2009 in Internet (9 comments)

I decided to trawl through the URLs of 17 online banks - a mixture of big and smaller names - to see what URLs they were using for their secure services, and how they varied from the standard domain names…

Snowthing like hapiness

Posted on 3 February 2009 in Life, London (No comments)

The recent snow is certainly bringing a fair amount of joy to the UK. And maybe it’s time to pop outside and enjoy it whilst I can.

Adverse Weather Conditions

Posted on 2 February 2009 in BBC, Work (2 comments)

You’ve just spent two hours getting into the office, delayed due to adverse weather conditions and ironically the worst problems see you stuck about one minute outside your destination station. You get in, past the snow men sentries outside, brush the snow off yourself and realise the office is deserted.

Scouring the VHS tapes for hidden gems

As I sit here typing this, my PC is hard at work recording onto computer, an old copy of News at Ten. Not just any News at Ten, but the “final” “ever” News at Ten from 1999.
