A good pair of walking boots

Posted on 28 October 2009 in Walking (1 comment)

There’s something about a good pair of hiking boots. As you stomp over hill and dale, a good pair will propel you forward and make even the hardest climb feel pretty good on the old feet. They’ll feel part of you.

The best train journey in Britain

Posted on 21 October 2009 in Travel and Holidays (No comments yet - be the first!)

There can be only one contender. It’s the West Highland Line from Fort William and there’s only one way to do it. The Caledonian Sleeper.

A visitor from London says hello

Posted on 20 October 2009 in Travel and Holidays (No comments yet - be the first!)

As we ambled along, a mighty TOOOT TOOOT! filled the valley.

All aboard the night train to the highlands!

Posted on 19 October 2009 in Travel and Holidays (1 comment)

Earlier in the year I blogged about travelling to Edinburgh by sleeper. But it’s not the only Scottish sleeper train there is, for you can also go to the highlands by overnight rail too.

A love of train travel

In a box in my house are a series of photo albums containing snapshots from my childhood, mostly taken by myself.

Beers of Ulverston

Posted on 14 October 2009 in Pubs (No comments yet - be the first!)

A brewery? In Ulverston? I pondered this for a short time as my research before arriving hadn’t mentioned anything of the sort. It was then that I suddenly thought… could it be Hartley’s?

The Old Dungeon Ghyll revisited

Posted on 13 October 2009 in Pubs (No comments yet - be the first!)

In 2000 Catherine and myself visited Dungeon Ghyll, and we’d been told by her dad that we had to pop into one of the pubs in the area - the Old Dungeon Ghyll. Back then I wasn’t that impressed. Nine years on, I was going to revisit…

The post Cumbria Way facial hair

Posted on 12 October 2009 in Life (No comments yet - be the first!)

It seems like months since I was up North walking the Cumbria Way, which to be fair it was. However the vagaries of normal life meant that ultimately I didn’t get round to writing all the blog posts I meant to about my time up there - especially as I ended up writing a plethora of articles about London at the same time. Still when you’ve got blog posts to write, why not write them even if it is far too late after the event! Especially when one of the things I didn’t get round to blogging about was facial hair!

It’s our final stop on the London pub tour as we arrive in Borough.

More of Capital’s top pubs - this time those in the City of London.

10 Years of… top drinking in top London Pubs (part 1 - the West End)

Posted on 9 October 2009 in London, Pubs (No comments yet - be the first!)

I couldn’t really finish this series of “10 Years in London” blog posts without talking about something I probably do most of out of all the leisure opportunities available. Go to the pub.

10 Years of… London beer

Posted on 8 October 2009 in Beer, London (No comments yet - be the first!)

It might sound a bit of a cliche, but when I first moved to London, one of the questions I’d get asked by people up north was “how do you cope with the beer down there?” as if there was something almost poisonous about the London beers!

10 Years of… things I like about London (part 2)

Posted on 7 October 2009 in London (No comments yet - be the first!)

Yesterday I shared the first part of a list I wrote about things I like in London. But that was only five things. And if you’re doing a ten year celebration you’ve got to have ten things. It’s tradition, or an old charter, or something.

10 Years of… things I like about London (part 1)

Posted on 6 October 2009 in London (No comments yet - be the first!)

London is many things, and one thing I’ve noticed it be a few times is frustrating. It’s busy, noisy, expensive, smelly… And when you’ve been stuck in a non-moving tube train for nearly an hour in the middle of summer, you can easily get in a negative mood. But there is more… so much more… that is great about this city. So that’s what this post is all about. Thinks I like about London. Here’s goes…

10 Years of Living in London

Posted on 5 October 2009 in London (1 comment)

It was on 5 October 1999 that I first took my steps into full time employment, as I started my first job in London, having moved to the city a few days before.
