Entries from October 2006

28 October 2006: A Brief History of BBC Parliament on Freeview
Well the news is out - BBC Parliament on DTT/Freeview will be going full screen in November, rather than the horrible quarter screen format that it goes out in now.
24 October 2006: Norway 2006: An appendix on Norwegian road signs
Norway is an interesting country in more than one way. And I have to say, it’s road signs seem to say a lot about it.
21 October 2006: Norway 2006: Day Eleven (Bergen, then home)
If you’re ever in Bergen, let me suggest the Hotel Augustin. It’s a nice place - friendly staff, fair trade coffee, organic tea and at breakfast they have what they call “eco-museli”. There’s lots of “eco” stuff in Bergen. It seems to mean organic. I think. Anyway, the “eco-museli”, perhaps with a spoonfull of rasins, is really nice.
19 October 2006: Have I Lost Lost?
As a Lost adict, the news that Sky have poached the programme from Channel 4 so that they can put it on Sky One, is not one I especially wish to hear. Especially as I don’t have pay-TV.
18 October 2006: Norway 2006: Day Ten (Waiting for the bus…)
Shaving woes, hanging around Ulvik for ages, and getting back to Bergen. The penultimate day in the holiday.
17 October 2006: Norway 2006: Day Nine (The Old Post Road)
By now we were becoming regulars on the 08:55 bus out of Ulvik. Today our destination was not far - the nearby town of Granvin. The intention was to walk the old post road back to Ulvik - the road that locals used to take to meet up with the postman before a main road was built to connect Ulvik with Voss.
17 October 2006: One Day In History
Regular readers might notice a difference in style for this entry. This is because this entry was originally written for One Day In History - an attempt to capture one days life of many, many people, and store that data in the British Library for future generations. That One Day is today, 17 October 2006. If you’re interested in contributing to the archive about your 17 October, don’t worry - it’s not too late! You can do so until the end of October, via their website.
16 October 2006: Norway 2006: Day Eight (Norway in a Nutshell)
Our intrepid duo does the famous tour of Norwegian sights.
11 October 2006: Norway 2006: Day Seven (Around Eidfjord)
Hardangervidda Nature Centre, a waterfall, a troll house, LOTS of walking and Norwegian bus driver honour…
11 October 2006: Water Bills
Got through a water bill the other day. This is not a particularly earth shattering event given people get bills all the time, but I was interested to see what difference our water saving measures had made to our bill. As we have a water meter, it was easy to find out.
5 October 2006: Norway 2006: Day Six (To Ulvik)
An hour in Vik, and arriving in Ulvik.
2 October 2006: Norway 2006: Day Five (A Folk Museum and the oddness of Norwegian buses)
In which our intrepid blogger tries to get to writing about a visit to a folk museum, but actually spends most of his time confused about buses.
1 October 2006: Norway 2006: Day Four (The English people who thought they were going up a hill, but actually came down a mountain)
“Visit the other side of the fjord!” proclaimed the sign outside Balestrand Tourist Information Office, before proceeding to inform those excited enough to be reading, a list of bus times to Dragsvik - cunningly the small town on the other side of the fjord.
