The All Around My Hat Incident became one of the most notorious bloopers ever to happen in the history of student radio....
Right, I dunno if you've looked at Palatinate, it's the fiftieth anniversary of Palatinate! And one of the things in the section two is "The Fifty Worst Songs Ever", compiled by Ian Hall, who's the music editor and also a Purple FM DJ. There's some good tunes in there; Aqua, Barbie Girl, it says here: "Life in plastic is fantastic. Shudder - scared the nation's consciousness". And er, what've we got, erm... number five, Timmy Mallet and Bomballurina, Itsy-Bitsy-Teeny-Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini: "She was afraid to go out of the locker! Ah-ha! It was probably that giant pick-hammer that did it Timmy!" there you go.
And there's another one down here, it says down here, twenty-eight - No Way No Way: "a song blatantly ripped off from the muppets theme tune". What's number four - Englebert Humperdink. "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree. Tie it round your neck mate, get lost!" <pause> Cutting edge of journalism innit, Palatinate at the minute... and at number one, Cranberries, Linger. Hmmm, I'm not really sure about that, I actually quite like that song.
And what's really embarrassing is at number eighteen. Steeleye Span. All Around My Hat. The comment there is just "embarrassing". <pause> I like that song. I played it two weeks ago. And in retaliation to you, Ian Hall, so-called music editor of Palatinate, I'm going to make it the Folkin' Good Tune again this week. This is Purple FM! This is All Around My Hat! and this, is STEELEYE SPAN!
Alas, you can hear the whole thing in real audio.

And one of the things in the section two is "The Fifty Worst Songs Ever", compiled by Ian Hall, who's the music editor and also a Purple FM DJ. He was on last night, apparently. So there you go, and there's some good tunes in there; Aqua, Barbie Girl, it says here: "Life in plastic is fantastic. Shudder - scared the nation's consciousness". Interestingly enough actually, Vanilla have somehow managed to get onto the Purple FM playlist, which I'm really embarrassed about, to be part of that... anyway, oh yeah, what's number four - Englebert Humperdink, it says here: "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree. Tie it round your neck mate, get lost!" <pause> Cutting edge of journalism innit, Palatinate at the minute... and at number one, Cranberries, Linger. <Wrong song starts then stops>
Oh. I got it wrong! <laughter> Right, try again... this is Purple FM, this is Steeleye Span, and this is All around My Hat! No its not, its not there yet... come on come on come on! Drama, feel the suspense come on... this was going to really slick and professional no its not going to work its not gonna work come on work work please please please! This is going to be really embarrassing and Ian Hall is goinig to come up and shout at me for being really incompetent...
<silence>
...no. Its not going to work...
Just to make matters worse than they already were, half way through playing the song, the CD player's display froze and the CD seamlessly leaped to the middle of a completely different track. All in all, not quite a successful link...
Well what possible postscript could there be to this sad tale? Well, perhaps we'll let Mr Bowden explain...
It was while I was standing for election for the post of Head of Music at Purple in Autumn 1998 that I finally met Ian Hall. He stood for the same position as did two other people.
Whilst the votes were being counted, I chatted with Ian, when he confessed that he had heard the show. He then proceeded to say that he actually hadn't put All Around My Hat in the Top 50.
Just as I was about to apologise, Ian then went on to say, that having now heard it, he completely supported the decision....
In the end, neither of us got the job - it going instead to a complete divot who had not a clue what he was doing and who was partly responsible for ensuring that the station didn't get to broadcast during that academic year...
Sums it all up really...
